There’s nothing that brings Josh as much joy and excitement as embarking on a journey to a place he has never been.

“I travel for the fullness of the human experience, to be a part of other cultures, learn languages, discover the history behind a place, eat questionable as well as delicious foods, but most of all for perspective. Comfortable conformity to ones own society is lethal. We were put on this planet, I don’t quite understand those who have no desire to explore every inch of it.”

To Josh, travel is freedom.

“It’s an exhilarating thrill, not a calm course of existence. It’s a footloose excitement and danger, an escape where unexpected divine appointments occur, connections are made and the entire experience is open to wherever it may lead. This is the difference between tourist and traveler.”

Josh affords travel mostly by going on volunteer trips, fundraising and networking.

“If there’s something I can do to help a community, experience their culture and learn something I will find a way to do it. Recently I returned from Ghana, West Africa where I taught English and Art classes to children. In Madrid, Spain, I taught English at a camp and in Kenya I helped build a school and worked at an orphanage. Throughout my travels I’ve met so many people all over the world, so I always have a place to stay or something to get involved in.”

Josh’s favourite place is Africa.

“The whole continent of Africa is by far the most incredible place I have ever been. There’s nothing like the rugged, thrilling adventure that comes with every day life there. There’s no shaking the red dust from your feet once you’ve been and the people, although living in physical poverty, are by far the richest human beings I have ever met. Rich in what matters.”

“Aside from Africa, I have a deep love for Paris and hope to spend romantic nights there with my future lover, whoever she may be. Other favorites include the Oregon coast, San Francisco, Austin TX, Chicago, Boston, Nashville, Montreal, Quebec City and of course, my home city of Philly is quite a precious, unique and stunning place.”

His advice to other travellers would be to take a leap.

“Step out of your comfort zone and go somewhere/do something extraordinary. Don’t let fears or finances hold you back, you will never be the same again. If you wait until “you’re ready” you’ll be waiting for the rest of your life.”
